Best Small Business Credit Cards 2012

Whether you have a small business with just one employee or over 100, it’s critical to track your your business expenses and keep them separate from your personal finances. Business credit cards help you do that, along with other perks like giving you some additional float time to pay off the balance, easy expense accounting and categorization, employee cards, business discounts, and my favorite: rewards and/or cash back. Here are the best small business charge and credit cards out there, I’ve included a few options depending on what best suits your needs.

The Chase Ink CashSM Business Card is a nice combination of upfront bonus and ongoing rewards utility. The sign-up bonus is up to $ 250 cash â€" $ 100 cash back bonus after your first purchase, plus an additional $ 150 after you spend $ 5,000 within the first 3 months. No annual fee. It’s a credit card with a 0% Introductory APR offer for 6 months on purchases and balance transfers. Here’s the cash back rewards:

  • 5% cash back on the first $ 25,000 spent annually at office supply stores, and on cellular phone, landline, internet, and cable TV services
  • 2% cash back on the first $ 25,000 spent annually at gas stations and restaurants
  • 1% cash back on all other card purchases with no limit to the amount you can earn

The Chase Ink BoldSM Business Card is a premium card with an improved upfront bonus and better rewards, but comes with an annual fee (waived the first year). The sign-up bonus is worth $ 500 cash or $ 625 towards travel â€" 25,000 after your first purchase, plus an additional 25,000 after you spend $ 10,000 in the first 3 months. You get that extra 25% towards any travel booked at their Ultimate Rewards travel portal with no blackouts or restrictions, and their prices aren’t any more expensive than at an Expedia or Travelocity-type site.

You get the same 5X and 2X reward categories as the Ink Cash, but again you have the improved travel redemption option and you can transfer points 1:1 to programs like United Airlines and Hyatt hotels. This is a charge card, so there is not interest and the spending limit is more flexible. The annual fee is %0 the first year, $ 95 after that. My recommendation would be to try it out for the first year, and see if the premium benefits are worth it for you. If not, you can downgrade to a no annual fee version.

The New Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPENThe Business Gold Rewards Card® from American Express OPEN is a charge card for small businesses where you must pay off the balance each month and you get the famous AMEX perks like purchase price protection, extended product return protection, and AMEX extended warranty. Details here, below are the highlights:

  • Limited-time offer: 50,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $ 5,000 in the first 3 months of Card membership. 50,000 MR points are very flexible. You could redeem for $ 500 in gift cards like Home Depot, Gap, Zappos, etc., 50,000 airline miles (even more during transfer bonus promotions), $ 500 towards airfare, and more.
  • Triple points on airfare. What makes this card different is that you can now earn 3X points on airfare as well as 2X points on advertising, shipping, and gas purchases on the first $ 100,000 of eligible purchases in each category each calendar year. Everything else earns 1 point per dollar spent.
  • The annual fee is $ 0 the first year, and $ 175 thereafter. This way you can try out the card for a year for free. Get unlimited Additional Gold Cards for an additional annual fee of $ 50 but this fee is also waived for the first year.

The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express OPEN is the small business version of one of my favorite personal credit cards. The sign-up bonus is up to 25,000 Starpoints: 10,000 bonus Starpoints after your first purchase, and an additional 15,000 bonus Starpoints after you spend $ 5,000 in the first 6 months. $ 0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $ 65. Star points from the Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty program are very flexible with multiple redemption options towards free hotel stays, frequent flier miles, and Amazon.com gift cards. I use them primarily for free hotel stays or topping up my miles accounts for awards, and actually value them at 2 cents a point or more.

The Capital One® SparkSM Cash Select card earns 1% cash back on all purchases, plus a 50% bonus on the cash back you earn every year with no annual fee. As long as your card is still open at the end of the year, that’s a total of 1.5% cash back. You can request the cash back as a credit on your account, or in the form of a check. In addition, it offers $ 0 Fraud Liability if your card is lost or stolen, as well as a year-end Summary to help you track business expenses.

The Capital One® SparkSM Cash card earns a whopping 2% cash back on ALL purchases. $ 0 intro annual fee for the first year, and $ 59 after that. This card is ideal for those business that make a large amount of purchases. You can request the cash back as a credit on your account, or in the form of a check. In addition, it offers an $ 0 Fraud Liability if your card is lost or stolen, as well as a year-end Summary to help you track business expenses.

FreedomPop: Free 4G Mobile Wireless Data, 500 MB Every Month

Here’s another potential way to cut those monthly expenses. FreedomPop is a start-up offering wireless 4G data service with a free basic plan including 500 megabytes data per month. You can earn more free data by referring your friends or doing things like product surveys or trials. No contracts, no cancellation fees, no ads. Otherwise, small overages will cost $ 0.02 per MB and bulk plans start from 1 GB for $ 10 per month. More details:

  • 4G Coverage details. The service is currently based on being an MVNO of the Clearwire WiMAX 4G network which has a coverage area of about 1/3rd of the US. There are stated plans to use Sprint’s 4G LTE network plus their 3G network as a fallback in 2013.
  • You’ll need a WiMAX modem, currently available as a USB modem stick or mobile WiFi hotspot “hockey puck”. The modems are “free” with a $ 49/$ 89 refundable security deposit and $ 5 shipping. Alternatively, you can pre-order a iPhone 4/4S or iPod Touch sleeve for $ 99 which won’t add much bulk.
  • No per-household limit. Based on media interviews, they are okay with households getting multiple devices each with their own free 500 MB allotment.
  • Fees and Upsells. They say no gotchas, but… they want $ 3 a month for “Speed Plus” which removes any data throttling. Usage alerts? Another $ 2 a month. If your account balance falls below $ 2 and you’re within 100 MB of your limit, it will automatically “top-up” with a $ 10 charge (you can turn this off in your billing settings). If you don’t use the service that month (less than 5 megabytes) they will charge you a $ 0.99 inactivity fee.

500 MB per month likely isn’t enough to replace your broadband internet connection, but it could definitely improve your cell phone bill. Brainstorming the various ways you could use FreedomPop to lower your monthly phone costs…

If you already pay for data, you could use this service and downgrade your current plan. If you only have a cheap basic cell phone plan for under $ 10 a month, now you can supplement any smartphone with free data. You could even turn an iPod Touch into a smartphone with no monthly costs at all by using Facetime, Skype, Google Voice, or other free VoIP services like the Vonage Mobile app. There are even rumors FreedomPop may start their own VoIP client. As a rough rule-of-thumb, a Skype-to-mobile/landline runs about 1 MB per minute. I’d still try and use WiFi or text messages when possible.

Looking at our billing history, I use around 1 GB a month and my wife uses only 300 MB a month. I think if I actually paid attention, I could stay under the free limits. However, I’m not sure I like the vibe of this company as their business model seems to be to advertise a completely free service but nickel-and-dime you into paying at least a few bucks per month. Once our contract is over, I don’t know if I’d rather deal with this or just switch to a Straight Talk $ 45 Unlimited prepaid plan with a used iPhone. But the upfront commitment is small, so I may try it out.

Fix Your Stuff: Repair Cafes, Fix-It Collectives, and Free Online Repair Manuals [9to5financial.blogspot.com]

Fix Your Stuff: Repair Cafes, Fix-It Collectives, and Free Online Repair Manuals

These days when you inquire about repairing something, you’re often confronted with a $ 50-$ 100 minimum diagnostic charge with no guarantee that it’ll be fixed. Combine this with carefully planned obsolescence by the manufacturers, and it’s no wonder that people tend to throw things away rather than fix them.

I was reading an AARP magazine article (yes, I read AARP magazine) about a growing chain of Repair Cafes in Amsterdam, where volunteers gather and help you repair your things from appliances to furniture to mending clothing. I think it’s a great idea for people to share their skills and help each other out in the community. Also profiled recently in the NY Times. My skilled 4-Her wife mends my clothing all the time, albeit reluctantly as she’d rather me look like I fell out of a J. Crew catalog…

I was also happy to find out that there are some local groups in the US doing similar things. It might be cool to volunteer at one, even if just to learn how to fix various things.

There are also many online guides to fixing your own stuff. Check out iFixit.com, their Self-Repair Manifesto, and their goal to make a free repair manual for every device out there from cars to iPhones.

Should Student Loans Be Cheaper at Harvard?

By Jen Wieczner

Harvard Yard, the heart of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.

The Federal government charges students uniform interest rates no matter how likely they are to default.

If the government ran its student loan programs the way banks do, Ivy Leaguers would probably get a steep discount, those at state universities would pay a bit more, and many at community colleges and for-profit schools would be deemed subprime borrowers.

No college degree guarantees one will be able to afford to pay off their student loans, but Ivy League borrowers rarely default on their debt: Just 1% of Harvard University students defaulted within three years of their loans coming due in 2009, according to Department of Education data released last week; and at the higher end, just under 3% of Columbia University alumni defaulted. Compare that with for-profit schools such as the University of Phoenix, where 26% of students defaulted in that same time period — nearly twice the national average.

Student Loan Defaults

School Type Rate # of Students in Default
Ivy League 1.6% 292
Private Colleges 7.5% 63,047
Public Colleges 11.0% 196,032
For-Profit Schools 22.7% 229,315

But the risk of default, while commonly priced into the interest rates banks charge on loans, is not a factor in federal student financial-aid packages. The Stafford loan, the most common federal student loan and the only type included in the default rate report, charges interest of up to 6.8% (some eligible students receive subsidized federal loans at a lower rate, but this is not affected by the school they attend).

Private lenders, on the other hand, likely account for default risk factors in the interest rates they charge students on their loans, including the student’s intended major, the college’s graduation rate, and the default rate of other borrowers at the school, according to Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com.

Federal student loans are not subject to these considerations, however, because the government’s primary goal in aiding students is to ensure access to higher education for people of all income levels, not to make a profit, though the federal program is profitable despite the defaults, says Mark Kantrowitz, the publisher of student loan website FinAid.org. Charging higher interest rates on loans for attending schools with higher default rates could amount to discrimination, he says, because those schools tend to have a higher proportion of low-income and minority students. “Besides being akin to redlining, it’s also contrary to the government’s goal,” he says.

What it Takes to Get Into Oxford or Cambridge

Increasing competition, especially from overseas applicants, is making it ever harder to get into college. Educational consultant and Oxford graduate Jane Welsh tells the WSJ’s Deborah Kan what students need to do to get into some of the world’s top universities.

“The whole purpose for these programs is to give students an opportunity to pursue a higher education that they may otherwise not be able to pursue because of the situation they’re in financially,” says an Education Department spokesman, noting that the interest rates on student loans are set by Congress, and that students taking out loans to enter college typically have no credit history because they are too young to own a home or have a credit card.

Student loan default rates are high even at schools that are typically the least expensive to attend, such as community colleges and for-profit universities, because those schools attract a population with a higher risk of default. Indeed, some low-income students nicknamed “Pell runners” take out loans to attend the cheapest schools with no intention of repaying or even completing coursework, instead pocketing the funds as a sort of welfare, Kantrowitz says. As for why the default rate is so high at for-profit institutions, a spokesman for the University of Phoenix says students who start — but fail to finish their degree — account for much of the problem. The default rates for those who actually graduate is only 4%. The school is also working to educate prospective students on the financial commitment of enrolling and on borrowing responsibly, the spokesman says.

Overborrowing is also a chronic problem among students at all types of schools, which could contribute to the persistently high default rates, Kantrowitz says. Federal law currently sets the same ceiling on student loans whether the student is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or a less costly certificate, which typically leads to fewer job prospects, he adds: “If students are getting a degree that isn’t going to be as lucrative, they shouldn’t be borrowing as much.”

There have been Congressional proposals that colleges share in the risk of default with the government, in the hope that the schools would work to prevent defaults, but these efforts have failed to gain traction because studies showed that colleges would raise tuition to cover the defaults, thereby negating any benefit.

But some federal rules are designed to lower the risk of student loan default by forcing students to better manage their finances and consider how much they actually need to borrow. The 30-day delay rule, for example, requires that loans only be disbursed a month after students request aid. While schools with a student loan default rate of less than 10% can get a waiver for this rule, many choose not to, according to Kantrowitz, because they find that students decide to borrow less after the 30-day waiting period. “By making them jump through a little bit of hoops, they’re less likely to go overboard in debt,” Kantrowitz says.

A Stock You Can Go Nuts On

By Brett Arends

In a market where almost every stock looks overvalued, this small nut company may prove the exception.

Nuts!

I have to confess I am a bit nuts about nuts.

No cashew is safe within my vicinity. I’m a predator for pistachios. Even as a child I could drain one of those jars of Planters’ dry roasted peanuts in one sitting. Until a few years ago, a local delicatessen used to serve these delicious, big fat almonds, but the owner retired, the shop closed, and I have never seen them since.

I cannot be alone. Prices have boomed in recent years, helped both by healthier eating here and by more demand from places like China. Peanut prices have risen by about a third in the past year.

It’s not a bad idea to invest where we shop — at the very least, we have some chance of getting some of our money back. And there is, sort of, a nut sector on the stock market (not to be confused with nutty sectors on the stock market, of which there are, of course, many).

Planters is owned by the huge food company Kraft  , but it only accounts for a small percentage of sales. Emerald nuts are owned by Diamond Foods /quotes/zigman/96355/quotes/nls/dmnd DMND +3.07%  , another broadly based food company. Private-label food company Ralcorp /quotes/zigman/173429/quotes/nls/rah RAH +1.03%   is big in the nut business. Macadamia Nut Orchards /quotes/zigman/236134/quotes/nls/nnut NNUT -0.27%   is a $ 30 million microcap growing and farming those expensive nuts in Hawaii. I’d love to be in the macadamia business. Have you seen the prices?

But the nut stock that intrigues me most is John B. Sanfilippo & Sons /quotes/zigman/74200/quotes/nls/jbss JBSS +0.38%  , a family-controlled company based in Elgin, Ill., that processes and markets peanuts, cashews, almonds and other nuts. It’s been around since 1922.

It owns the Fisher Nuts and Orchard Valley brands and produces private-label nuts for a lot of big retailers, including Wal-Mart.

In the past five years, sales have risen 29% to $ 700 million. The company has swung from a $ 6 million net loss to $ 17 million net income. The balance sheet is excellent: Net current assets, including nut inventories of $ 146 million, exceed total liabilities by $ 37 million.

Compare that with the company’s nominal $ 137 million market value. Net of current assets, nuts and liabilities, it’s really only being valued at about $ 100 million.

Adam Strauss, co-manager of the Appleseed /quotes/zigman/442173 APPLX -0.23%   mutual fund, is a big investor and a fan. He explains that the company has become more proactive in recent years about marketing and focusing on the consumer. Earnings, he says, are also artificially depressed on the books as the company takes a big depreciation charge for a new facility in Illinois.

In the financial year that runs through June 2013, he believes free cash flow could hit $ 30 million. In relation to the company’s market value, that would be huge.

John B. Sanfilippo & Sons stock went, er, nuts during the Atkins Diet craze last decade, hitting $ 50 at one point. Today it’s $ 13. It’s come back down in recent months, after a huge run-up in the past two years. Small company stocks are volatile, of course: It just takes one or two big sellers to mark it down.

There are concerns in the nut business, like anything else. Commodity prices have been incredibly volatile in recent years. Consumers are watching their budgets these days. And raw nut prices tend to rise faster on the way up than the company can raise its own prices: The lag can squeeze margins. The company, furthermore, does not pay a dividend. The Sanfilippos own 68% of the voting stock. You’re an outsider.

Nonetheless, in a market where almost everything looks fully priced or wildly overvalued, this might be an exception.

Or am I nuts?
