Aiming to Slim Down Its Patent Risk, RIM Licenses Microsoft's exFAT File Format

Research In Motion has taken a license from Microsoft to the exFAT file format, becoming the latest company to strike a deal for the file storage system technology.

It’s not the first licensing deal between the two companies, as RIM also has a license to use Microsoft’s ActiveSync e-mail protocols.

However, it does mark the latest effort by Microsoft to get rivals to sign a deal for its technology. In particular, Microsoft has lately been going after makers of Android devices, suing Motorola and striking deals with, among others, HTC and Samsung.
